The helium or hydrogen injected into the envelopes of gas balloons gives them their first lift. There are two techniques for pilots to manage their balloon's height. Pilots can either wait for the decreasing nighttime temperatures to compress the gas in their envelope, or they can vent helium or hydrogen through the top of their envelope. Pilots have two options for ascending: either they can drop ballast, which is often sand or water, or they may wait for warmer daylight temperatures to heat the gas and cause it to expand in the envelope. Warm air ascends. If there is enough hot air, the envelope, gondola, and passengers will be gently lifted into the air. By employing "burners" to heat additional air, releasing air slowly to let heated air cool, or utilizing a variety of vents strategically placed on the envelope to vent hot air, pilots may manage their ascent and descent.
